The Central Virginia Chapter of the National MS Society is hosting their annual Bike MS event this June 1st and 2nd, kicking off at 4400 Williamsburg Avenue in Richmond, Virginia. In the past, all participants biked 150 miles from Richmond to Williamsburg and back in the two days, stopping after the first day in Williamsburg for an awards ceremony, dinner celebration and overnight stay. This year, the Central Virginia Chapter of the National MS Society is providing more options for participants than ever before: cyclists can choose to do a one-day ride (a 25-mile or 50-mile ride on Sunday June 2nd) or they can bike virtually on stationary bikes at their local YMCA on Sunday, May 19th.
“Riding 150 miles isn’t an easy task – it takes a lot of training and the proper equipment to complete something like that,” says Sherri Ellis, President of the Central Virginia Chapter of the National MS Society. “Giving people the option to ride 25 or 50 miles, or to ride indoors at a local YMCA will be a great transition for beginner cyclists who want to see what Bike MS is all about, but aren’t quite ready for the two-day event. Hopefully this will prepare them to participate in the full ride next year.”
People interested in riding virtually for Bike MS: Ride Virginia have four YMCA locations to choose from: Shady Grove, Tuckahoe, Midlothian and Chester. The riding will take place Sunday, May 19th from 2:30-5:30pm. All virtual riders are invited to participate in the finish line festivities on June 2nd in Richmond back on Williamsburg Avenue. Food, beer, music, awards and more will be available to cyclists at the finish.
“In 2012, Bike MS raised 373,290 with 520 cyclists,” said Sherri Ellis, President of the Central Virginia Chapter of the National MS Society. “This year, with more options available to cyclists than ever before, we’re hoping to raise $425,000 and generate more awareness and hope for the future of MS.”
Interested parties may register and raise funds for Bike MS: Ride Virginia as an individual, team or virtual rider at IRideForMS.org, or by contacting Tiffany Epley at 804-591-3036 or tiffany.epley(at)nmss(dot)org.
