RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell has set August 6, 2013, as the date for the special election to fill the seat of Senator Harry Blevins, who announced his retirement from the Senate of Virginia effective August 5, 2013.
“Senator Blevins has been an outstanding and selfless public servant for the citizens of his district and the Commonwealth for the last 15 years,” Governor McDonnell said. “I had the pleasure of serving with him in the House, and he has been a great ally during my time as attorney general and governor. He has been a tireless advocate on education issues in Virginia, and his presence in the Senate will be missed. I wish Senator Blevins all the best for he and his wife as they embark on a new chapter of their lives together. It is imperative that Virginians have full representation at all levels of government. In order to ensure continuity of representation for the citizens of this district, I am calling for the special election to be held on August 6, one day after Senator Blevins’ retirement takes effect. Having the special election in August will also allow for a subsequent special election should it be necessary after the Senate election.”
Should the parties or prospective candidates have any questions, they should contact the Virginia State Board of Elections at 1-800-552-9745 and ask for “Special Election Information.”
