More than 70 vendors help bring health and fitness fair to the streets of Richmond

Saturday, June 22 marks the inaugural RVA Streets Alive! festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Sports Backers, the City of Richmond and the Mayor’s Healthy Richmond Campaign, and the Richmond City Health District have partnered to create this open streets festival, which will close a 2.5-mile loop connecting the Manchester and 14th Street bridges, to automobile traffic to allow residents and visitors to use these streets to be active through running, walking, biking, and many other physical activities.

To help celebrate Richmond’s efforts to become a more active region, Senator Mark Warner and Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones will be participating in a walking tour of the course beginning at 11:30 a.m., making many stops along the way to participate in select vendor activities.

“I’m very much looking forward to attending Richmond’s first Streets Alive! festival,” says Senator Warner. “I know this event will grow year after year as an exciting way to introduce Virginians to fitness opportunities that will help them live longer, healthier lives and be active in their communities.”

“An active lifestyle is vitally important to the overall health of our city,” says Major Jones. “I welcome this outdoor health fair as the beginning of a unique Richmond tradition celebrating health and well being.”

Road Closures:
The event will close the northbound lanes of the Manchester Bridge, bearing left onto Commerce Road. At Hull Street, the course turns left and crosses the 14th Street Bridge to Canal Street, where the course continues left to Virginia Street. At Virginia Street, the course will make a left, turn up to go across the canal before turning right along the flood wall, through the parking lot and up to Byrd Street, where it will reconnect with the Manchester Bridge to complete the loop. The far left lane of Byrd Street will be open to traffic from 9th to 10th Streets to access the Downtown Expressway. The southbound lanes of the Manchester Bridge will be open to traffic to the Semmes Avenue exit. Semmes Avenue will be turned into a two way rod under the Manchester Bridge to give people access to the inside of the course. All roads that are part of the 2.5-mile RVA Streets Alive! course will be closed to vehicular traffic from 6:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

RVA Streets Alive! wants to thank Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation, Bon Secours, The Community Foundation serving Richmond and Central Virginia, Richmond Memorial Health Foundation, Virginia Department of Health, Casa Del Barco, and Virginia Premier Health Plan, Inc for their participation in the event.
