The City of Richmond is proud to host the opening night of the Fifth Annual RVA Environmental Film Festival on February 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Richmond Public Library – Main Branch, 101 East Franklin Street. The RVA Environmental Film Festival is presented by the EnRichmond Foundation, Falls of the James Group – Sierra Club, Capital Region Land Conservancy, and EarthCraft Virginia. The weeklong event, which ends on February 8, will showcase local and national films selected to raise awareness of environmental issues relevant to the Richmond region, nation and planet. This year, the festival will take place at several other City locations including the Science Museum of Virginia, University of Richmond, VCU’s Grace Street Theater, the Visual Arts Center of Richmond and the Byrd Theatre in Carytown. All films are free and open to the public.
The Richmond Main Library opening night film, titled With My Own Two Wheels, is about how the bicycle can change the world—one pedal stroke at a time. For many Americans, the bicycle is a choice, an expensive toy or an eco-conscious mode of transportation. For countless others across the globe, it is much more. For Fred, a health worker in Zambia, the bicycle is a means of reaching twice as many patients. For Bharati, a teenager in India, it provides access to education. For Mirriam, a disabled Ghanaian woman, working on bicycles is an escape from the stigma attached to disabled people in her community. For Carlos, a farmer in Guatemala, pedal power is a way to help neighbors reduce their impact on the environment. For Sharkey, a young man in California, the bicycle is an escape from the gangs that consume so many of his peers. With My Own Two Wheels weaves together the experiences of these five individuals into a single story about how the bicycle can change the world—one pedal stroke at a time.
