RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — The company is seeking qualified high school seniors for the Dominion Memorial Scholarship Fund. Online applications are being accepted through Jan. 31, 2017.

Now in its 10th year, the program was established in memory of three college students with close ties to Dominion who were slain in the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings. Six new scholarships will be awarded for the 2017-2018 academic year. The scholarships are up to $5,000 each for tuition and fees and are renewable for up to three years, for a total of four years.

Program details:

Applications will be accepted from high school seniors whose parents or grandparents are current, non-officer Dominion employees or retirees with at least one year of service as of Jan. 31, 2017 as certified by Dominion’s Human Resources department.
Criteria for acceptance includes: a minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale, as well as a demonstrated history of volunteerism and outstanding service to the student’s community.
Eligible institutions include accredited nonprofit two- and four-year colleges and universities in the United States.

Dominion Memorial Scholarship

Rachel Elizabeth Hill
Nicole Regina White

The Dominion community suffered tragic losses on April 16, 2007. The Virginia Tech shootings, in Blacksburg, Virginia, took the lives of three college students whose parent or grandparent worked for Dominion.

James C. “Bubba” Brooks, a retired line foreman, lost his granddaughter, Rachael Elizabeth Hill; Granville G. Gwaltney, a retired meter technician, lost his grandson, Matthew Gregory Gwaltney; and David M. “Mike” White, a transmission lineman, lost his daughter, Nicole Regina White, in the classroom shootings.

In memory of Rachael, Matthew and Nicole and in support of Bubba, Granville and Mike, Dominion is proud to offer these scholarships to the children and grandchildren of Dominion employees and retirees.

About the Scholarships

Six college scholarships of up to $5,000 annually will be awarded, with two each named as follows:

Nicole Regina White Memorial Scholarship
Recipients will be high school seniors whose parent or grandparent is a current Dominion employee or retiree. Recipients will be chosen on the basis of community service and leadership as well as academic performance. Awards are for tuition and fees at accredited U.S. two- or four-year colleges and universities and will be paid directly to the educational institution. Scholarships are renewable for up to three additional years, provided the student continues to meet the award criteria.

Application Cycle

November 1 – Scholarship applications available
January 31 – Applications due by 5 p.m.
April 16 – Notification to all applicants
Eligibility

Limited to children or grandchildren of a retired or current, permanent, full-time Dominion employee.
Must be a high school senior with a minimum cumulative six-semester GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated service to community.
Children/grandchildren of Dominion officers and selection committee are not eligible.
Must have plans for full-time attendance at a two- or four-year accredited U.S. college or university.
