The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday, held this year on Monday, January 16, is celebrated as a National Day of Service. Residents are encouraged to attend Richmond’s recognition ceremony, “The Struggle and the Dream,” from 10 – 11 a.m. at United Methodist Family Services (UMFS) located at 3900 W. Broad Street – Dining Hall #11. This National Day of Service celebration is being organized by the Department of Human Services, Office on Volunteerism and the AmeriCorps ACES program.
Invited guest speaker, Mayor Levar M. Stoney, will provide the keynote address. Other Richmond officials scheduled to attend include councilmembers from various voter districts, Ms. Selena Cuffee-Glenn, Chief Administrative Officer, Ms. Debra Gardner, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of Human Services and Alfred Durham, Chief of Police.
Additional activities will include a service learning exercise from 11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., and from noon – 2 p.m., over 100 volunteers (including Fort Lee service members, city employees, residents and members of various local nonprofit organizations) will fan out across the city to engage citizens in the following service-related projects: tree-planting at George Wythe High School and cleanup initiatives at Powhatan Hill Park, Gillies Creek, Highland Park, Bryan Park and the James River Park System. Volunteers will also visit Brookdale Imperial Plaza and spend time interacting with elderly residents.
