Mayor Levar Stoney invites the public to join in a Day of Service and Remembrance on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, in commemoration of the 17th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. The event will be held at Kanawha Plaza, located downtown in front of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.

The formal event will begin at noon with the Ft. Lee Brass Quintet, ringing of bells, color guard, and moment of silence followed by remarks from Mayor Stoney and various first-response leaders, including Tammy Hornsby-Fink – Deputy System Chief Information Security Officer, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond (decorated U.S. Air Force veteran) and representation from Fort Lee. Many other first-response leaders and personnel will be on-site to commemorate the day. Additionally, Richmond’s own Sharon Rae North, national and Billboard artist, will honor the day in song.

At the close of the formal event, from 12:30-1 p.m., there will be an opportunity to learn more about emergency preparedness with the City’s Office of Emergency Management and tours of the City’s Mobile Command Post. September is National Preparedness Month and the City of Richmond wants to ensure that more and more residents are prepared for disasters. The Richmond Fire Department will review fire safety in the home within the City’s mobile Fire Safety House as well as provide information and hands-on learning regarding water safety. The Richmond Ambulance Authority will provide Hands-Only CPR training and encourage attendees to become better prepared to help save lives by way of the PulsePoint app. Other safety awareness agencies will be on site as well, including Community Outreach staff from both the Office of the Attorney General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

At the conclusion of the formal program, volunteers will depart to begin several service projects throughout the city from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. To learn more about the service projects and to sign up, go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NQW325T.
